Cities with charging stations with access points to free Wi-Fi and the possibility of recharging mobiles will be a reality in most of the major European cities. It is expected that by 2020. The president of the European community Jean Claude Juncker has promised to offer the necessary aids to install free wifi of a minimum of at least 30 Mbps in the center of large European cities, claiming that people and the economy need it. It will also promote 5G technology so that it is accessible to all by the year 2025.

For this purpose, aid must be requested through vouchers to the municipalities of all the Member States: these are the so-called WiFi4EU subsidies. The different municipalities can apply for the 15000 E aid bonds. The municipality of Vigo will opt for these bonds that will go directly to the company that the Vigo City Council contracts to provide the city with free wireless internet access.

Cities such as NY, London, Paris, Amsterdam … now offer it. Also in different cities and smaller Spanish municipalities and free Wi-Fi are offered as Bilbao, Barcelona, ​​Victoria, Zaragoza, etc.

Special mention deserve charging stations such as the one that exists in the city of Altafulla (Catalonia) because it works with the energy generated by a micro-turbine HE placed in parallel to the pressure reducing valves in the network of pipes that carry potable water to the city ​​being enough to supply energy.

Also in Vigo there is a pilot project to provide citizens with free Internet access in the beginning at least: At the moment it is operating in Plaza América, the Calvario market area and Independence Square accessing a free access network: wifi_vigo.
