The city of Vigo will host the Vegan Fair 2025 on Saturday, October 25, and Sunday, October 26. An event that has become the largest gathering for the vegan and sustainable lifestyle in Galicia. The fair will take place at the IFEVI exhibition center.

The venue will feature over one hundred exhibitor booths offering plant-based food products, ethical cosmetics, sustainable fashion, specialized books, and eco-friendly services. In addition, there will be a food truck area with a wide variety of vegan culinary options and a children’s zone with fun and educational activities.

The fair began in 2021 and, except for the 2023 edition held in Madrid, it has always taken place in the city of Vigo.

Among the new features of this edition are two themed areas. The first, called "O Parladoiro," will be a discussion forum with guests from academic, scientific, and activist backgrounds. The second, "A Lareira," will be a slow-cooking space focused on mindful eating, using local ingredients and traditional recipes adapted to an ethical philosophy.

Tickets are already on sale. The price for a single-day entry is five euros, while the two-day pass costs eight euros.

Vegan Fair Gal reinforces its commitment to building a strong network among businesses, consumers, social organizations, and individuals working toward a more ethical, fair, and sustainable Galicia. It also aims to show that a different model of consumption and coexistence is possible  one that embraces flavor, culture, and innovation without compromise.

The High Court of Justice of Galicia (TSXG) has upheld the convictions of two men for the rape of a young woman in an apartment on Travesía de Vigo, as well as for the non-consensual recording of the assault. The events occurred in September 2022, when the victim met the defendants at a nightclub in the Arenal area of Vigo. After the bars closed, they all went to an apartment that belonged to a friend of one of the accused.

Inside the apartment, one of the defendants engaged in sexual relations with the young woman. According to the trial, the initial encounter was consensual, but later the second defendant entered the room, and both engaged in sexual acts with the victim, who repeatedly expressed that she did not want to continue. Additionally, a third person recorded the scene on his mobile phone without the victim’s consent.

The first defendant was sentenced to eight years in prison for a sexual assault offense, with the mitigating circumstance of having provided compensation for damages. The second was sentenced to eleven and a half years in prison: eight years for sexual assault and an additional three and a half years for the crime of unlawful discovery and disclosure of secrets, due to having recorded the sexual act without permission. He was also fined €2,520 for this second offense.

Both defendants must jointly compensate the victim with the amount of €17,000, of which €7,500 had already been deposited by one of the convicted men before the verdict as part of the damage compensation. Meanwhile, the third individual was acquitted of the charge of failure to render assistance.

This Thursday, September 25, Galicia will experience a day of educational strike driven by the frustration of teachers facing a situation that many consider unsustainable.
Called by the unions CIG-Ensino and STEG, the strike by non-university teaching staff aims to raise awareness about the progressive deterioration of public education in the region and to demand concrete measures from the Xunta de Galicia.

The reasons behind the strike are: increasingly overcrowded classrooms, insufficient teaching staff, precarious working conditions, and an education policy that fails to address the real needs of schools.

One of the most repeated demands is the reduction of teaching hours, restoring the previous workload of18 hours per week in secondary and vocational education (FP)and 21 hours in early childhood and primary education, conditions that were in place before the cuts imposed following the 2008 crisis.

The Xunta de Galicia has established minimum services to ensure schools remain open, with the presence of management staff and supervision for minors and students who attend class.

In Ourense, as in other areas of Galicia, as well as in the Picos de Europa, Las Médulas in León, and several villages in Spain already devastated by the flames, the fires continue to spread. Many residents, refusing to abandon their homes, are putting their lives at risk as they try to protect their houses, memories, and farmland.

The situation is also affecting travelers. Many people have been stranded in Galicia, unable to leave due to train services being suspended because of the fires. Flight prices have soared, rental cars are sold out, and buses are packed. It was not until yesterday that some routes began to resume.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister remains on vacation in Lanzarote with family and friends, with no apparent deployment of sufficient resources to combat the fires—blazes that could not be prevented through firebreaks, land clearing, property maintenance, grazing, or other forest management measures. On top of this, the privatization of services and clearly insufficient forestry policies have left the country unable to control the situation.

Many of the fires appear to have been deliberately set. Nevertheless, numerous residents insist on staying in their homes, attempting to fight the flames with buckets and hoses, thereby endangering themselves.

In Lugo and Ourense, air quality has become very poor due to the smoke. Additional support has already arrived from Europe, and although temperatures have begun to drop—helping firefighting efforts—the emergency remains ongoing.

Water

Water restrictions have begun in several municipalities in the province of Pontevedra.

Orders have been issued prohibiting the filling of swimming pools and urging responsible water consumption during a summer heat wave and the increase in population due to the arrival of tourists.

Last year, 2024, the province of Pontevedra closed with a record 1.8 million visitors, 10.5% more than in 2023. Foreign tourism in 2024 grew by 3.5%.

The City Council of Covelo (Pontevedra) has banned the use of water to fill swimming pools or irrigate orchards or gardens. Violations are subject to fines of between €50 and €500, as well as immediate water supply cut-off.

Labor Day is a day celebrated in many countries to commemorate the struggle for workers' rights.

Celebrated on this day to pay homage to the martyrs of Chicago, a country where a series of revolts and strikes began to demand an 8-hour workday, 8 hours of leisure and 8 hours of rest, since until now the workday lasted more than 16 hours.

On May 1, 1886, more than 300,000 workers in this country went on strike. On May 4, 1886, during a demonstration in Chicago's Haymarket Square, known as the Haymarket Riot, a bomb was thrown at the police, resulting in the death of several policemen and civilians. As a result, several union leaders were sentenced to death in retaliation; “The Chicago Martyrs”.

Since 1889, when Paris proclaimed May 1st Workers' Day, it has been celebrated in many countries such as Spain, the first edition of the Varco multidisciplinary fair will be held in Vigo, dates, program and information.

Habemus lux

After a total power outage in Spain, Portugal and southern France, which did not affect Andorra for more than 15 hours, normality is being restored.

The chaos was evident in the railway and subway stations. The UME arrived to mobilize various troops and rescue more than 30,000 travelers who had been stopped between different stations enabling numerous buses.

Air services were much less affected. In any case, the Directorate General for Consumer Affairs has reminded consumers affected by the electricity blackout that they can claim reimbursement of air, boat, train or bus tickets or an alternative trip within the period indicated for each case, as well as unused mobile data and tickets for cancelled events.

It has also been contemplated that the deadlines for judicial processes and other official bodies to present documentation will be extended by 24 hours in addition to those of the computation that corresponded to them by law.

The causes of the total power outage have not yet been reliably clarified and the theories about whether it was a cyber attack, a failure of the electric company or other reasons have not yet been fully validated, while the National Court has opened a file to find out if the power failure was due to sabotage.

Schools in ten communities have suspended classes allowing access to classrooms: Galicia, Aragon, Madrid, Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, La Rioja, Murcia, Valencia.

This first event on the peninsula has rekindled purchases of analog radios, batteries, candles and flashlights. With all its good and bad anecdotes. As the rest of screens and cell phones in addition to the wonderful view of the night sky as from the most bustling cities usually do not have the opportunity to appreciate so many constellations and stars due to light pollution or the long wait of travelers without being able to communicate.
