September 25, 2025 will mark the centenary celebration of the Carmelitas School in Vigo, a significant milestone for this institution.

The Carmelitas School in Vigo was founded in 1925 by the Congregation of the Carmelite Sisters, a religious order that has been dedicated to the education of children and young people since its inception. The context of its creation occurred at a key moment for the city, when Vigo was experiencing rapid economic and population growth due to industrial development, alongside the need for an education that combined academic training with the teaching of values.

Faithful to their religious mission, the Carmelite Sisters implemented an approach that prioritized discipline, respect, and ethics—values that would eventually become deeply integrated into the educational culture of Vigo. In addition to academic learning, the school also emphasized the personal and spiritual development of its students.

In its early years, the school expanded its facilities to meet the demands of a constantly growing student population. Initially, it was an all-girls school, later incorporating boys from the city who chose this institution.

The incorporation of new technologies in the 1990s marked a turning point, as it allowed students to access more advanced educational tools and resources, preparing new generations to face the challenges of the 21st century.

Today, the Carmelitas School remains one of the most important educational institutions in the city.

In a few years, other schools in Vigo will also reach their centenary:

  • San José School, founded by the Brothers of La Salle in 1942, is also one of the most well-known concerted schools in Vigo. Throughout its history, it has undergone several transformations, but has always remained faithful to its educational mission.
  • Salesianos School, founded by the Salesian Congregation in 1955, is one of the oldest schools in Vigo. From its early years, it has been a concerted school, offering an education that combines academic training with Christian values.

  • Maristas School, founded in 1959 by the Marist Brothers, centers its educational tradition around comprehensive formation, both academically and in human and Christian values.
  • Franciscano María Ana Mogas School, founded in 1976 in Vigo, is known for offering an environment that combines academic excellence with personal and social development.
