The Holi / Joli is a Hindu festival from India and countries with Hindu communities such as Nepal, United Kingdom, United States, Sri Lanka ... also called Spring Festival. Which is celebrated in the last full moon of winter with a burst of color produced by colored powders and colored water that are thrown over people to celebrate the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Originally also with healthy intention because the powders come from herbs that are prescribed by the Ayurvedic (Indian doctors) to prevent colds, allergic diseases ...
During this celebration the differences between rich and poor, men and women so accused in these cultures are forgotten.
It also has a religious meaning:
Joli actually refers to Joliká, sister of King Hiranyakashipu and aunt of Prince Prahladael. Legend has it that when the king was crowned, he made everyone worship him only. However Prince Prahlada decided to continue worshiping Vishnu, which attracted the wrath of his father and aunt. This attempt to kill him inviting the prince to approach her to a bonfire, wearing a flame-retardant robe that protected him from the fire. More at the last moment the god Vishnu protected the prince with the mantle and killing the king. The triumph of good over evil and the triumph of love that the prince professed to his god were celebrated in this festival. On the eve of the Holi a bonfire is lit in regions of India and people dance around it in remembrance of it.
In the West we have brought the color, the party, the disinhibition and the joy of this festival to festivals, races, concerts ... Like the race that takes place in Vigo this Sunday, May 12, in which five kilometers of running or walking are carried out full of color and joy.
The departure and arrival will be at Avenida de Samil (parking next to the tennis courts) at 11 am. The race kits will be collected (prior registration) at the Plaza Elíptica shopping center in Vigo on May 10 and 11 (from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.).
