The 5th strongest earthquake in history, measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale, struck the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia today. Now Hawaii, Japan, Alaska, Russia, and the Pacific coast are on tsunami alert, while residents and tourists flee to higher ground.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicenter was located about 126 kilometers from Kamchatski and at a depth of 20.7 km. The Kamchatka Peninsula is located at the collision point between the Pacific and North American plates.
