Today, Easter Monday, April 21, Pope Francis left us at the age of 88, due to a cerebral stroke that caused an irreversible heart failure at 7:35 a.m.
A Jesuit of Argentinean origin, he was the first non-European Pope in 10 centuries, elected on the fifth ballot of the second day of the conclave and coexisted in life with the Pope who preceded him and who had resigned: Benedict XVI, who died in 2022.
Pope Francis will be remembered for his conciliatory character, his more than 60 trips to spread the word of God and his rejection of Vatican luxuries.
So there will be big changes with respect to the burial of its predecessors.
The Pope himself, whose secular name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio, left written in his will the instructions for his final resting place; such as that his tombstone should only bear the name Franciscus, which he chose for his papacy in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. That he was to be buried in the ground of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome because of his devotion to the Virgin Mary and to whose Basilica he went to pray before and after each international trip. Between the Pauline Chapel (Chapel of the Salus Populi Romani) and the Sforza Chapel. He was buried in a single wooden coffin with a zinc interior. No catafalque or papal crosier, and his coffin will remain open and can be visited by the faithful who wish to say goodbye until Friday. This Saturday 26th the funeral will be held at 10:00 am.
Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore
Pope Francis' apartment in the Santa Marta residence where he lived, instead of the Apostolic Palace, has been sealed. Francis Pope was a lover of poetry, tango, mate and follower of the San Lorenzo club.
All offices cease except that of Cardinal Camerlengo, Kevin Farrell, who carried out the certification of his death and began the vacant see, taking command of the Vatican and destroying the ring of Pescador. Giving place to the funeral.
